Description:

The Conflict Handling section of The MaCE LDR™ provides people with an understanding of their current ability to handling inter-personal and mediate inter-Stakeholder conflict in the workplace.

There are more opportunities for conflicts to occur in MaCE enabled organisation because of the inherent challenges that exist in their operational running (e.g. multiple reporting relationships; cross-functional goals; people having responsibility without authority (or vice versa); communication & co-ordination problems caused by geographic, cultural or behavioural differences, etc).

This is why MaCE Leaders at every level must be able to not only resolve their own inter-personal conflicts locally, quickly and effectively, but must also be able to mediate inter-Stakeholder conflicts so that relationships are not damaged or trust destroyed.

The 3 Levels that a MaCE Leader can achieve in this Capability Area are Gold, Silver or Bronze...

Gold (Role Model) Level

Leaders at this level not only know how to resolve inter-personal conflict between themselves and others; but they also know how to mediate conflict between Stakeholders inclusively and effectively, which results in their experiencing deeper levels of trust and respect in all their Stakeholder relationships. A challenge for leaders at this level is in encouraging people to use open and honest dialogues to resolve their differences when conflict trigger events inevitably occur.

Silver (Developing) Level

Leaders at this level recognise people have different conflict handling preferences and will vary their approach; sometimes using structured, but more often using unstructured conflict handling methods because they lack knowledge, skill, confidence or practice. A challenge for Leaders at this level is in using a consistent conflict handling process so all their Stakeholders benefit and they don’t leave people feeling frustrated, which can put an unnecessary strain on relationships.

Bronze (Learning) Level

Leaders at this level usually don’t know about conflict handling preferences; or will encourage the suppression of conflict which results in frustration, unresolved conflict and stress; or alternatively they will use Adversarial & Defendant modes of conflict management and view people as opponents to be ‘judged’. A challenge for leaders at this level is learning how to inclusively handle inter-personal & mediate inter-Stakeholder conflict so that relationships are strengthened not damaged.

Thought for the Day...

Not everything that is faced can be changed.

But nothing can be changed until it is faced.
