"The ability to show flexible Leadership and Team Working skills and take responsibility for making decisions and initiating action"
The Leadership Accountability section of The MaCE LDR™ provides people with an understanding of how to lead others effectively in a multi-dimensional, matrix type structures.
Leadership in hierarchies is based on managers and employees recognising and reinforcing clearly defined functional report lines. Whereas leadership in matrixed environments require leaders to challenge that paradigm and its attendant assumptions about leadership roles, such as who can be a ‘Leader’, as power is only partially based on someone’s positional status or 'rank'.
This is why MaCE Leaders at every level need to learn how to consistently demonstrate grace under pressure and be capable and confident in making local decisions that could have a global impact. To do this a MaCE Leader has to develop the behavioural flexibility to sensitively switch from being a Team Player to a Team Leader, and back again, in very short time frames.
The 3 Levels that a MaCE Leader can achieve in this Capability Area are Gold, Silver or Bronze...
Leaders at this level use consistent but flexible behaviours and approaches and know how to leverage their personality driven leadership preferences to inclusively serve and influence the needs and preferences of their Stakeholders. The challenges Leaders face at this level are in encouraging others to use collaborative practices and transparent and inclusive decision making processes that engage, involve and encourage people to work across and beyond organisational boundary lines.
Silver (Developing) Level
Leaders at this level understand how to address the Plan, People, Pace & Purpose factors needed to deliver results in a matrix; but will on occasion revert back to 'comfortable' hierarchical behaviours & practices. The challenge Leaders face at this level is developing consistent but flexible behaviours; assuming responsibility without authority; and being pro-active in taking the initiative to make decisions that ensure morale and motivation are maintained when goals or priorities are changed.
Bronze (Learning) Level
Leaders at this level often use beliefs, behaviours, processes & practices they learnt from working in hierarchical structures, which create silo mentalities, protectionist attitudes and disempowering approval seeking behaviours. In a matrix this outlook causes frustration, confusion or anger and results in people blaming the structure for their anxiety or confusion - and not their own lack of leadership ability. The challenges Leaders face at this Level is learning to think strategically while acting locally; managing their own (and others) self-serving needs, egos and agendas; and giving up the use of unhelpful practices.
