Matrix structures are counterintuitive to people brought up to believe in a ‘line and staff’ (hierarchical ‘command and control’) models of performance managing. Similarly having multiple performance reporting lines (i.e. someone not only having a functional line manager, but also several Matrix, Project or Process type managers who are responsible for contributing to performance Reviews and Assessments), can cause people new to matrix operations with a degree of confusion, anxiety and stress. Matrix structures are designed to enable multiple goals (or projects, process and initiatives) to be delivered through leveraging a relatively small number of resources across organisational and geographic boundaries (i.e. across functional, business unit and specialism boundary lines), in order to maximise economies of scale and speed of response. In this kind of interdependent, multidimensional and often global work context, the ability to ‘Performance Manage’ is not only management responsibility, but is a key part of everyone’s role.
The Matrix Performance Management Workshop provides an understanding of shared performance responsibility and ownership, enabling people to recognise the need to develop a proactive and personal approach towards performance management using a set of beliefs, behaviours, knowledge and skills that are designed to assess, develop and motivate people so that they can contribute to team and organisational success, through the delivery of exceptional levels of personal performance.
People attending the Matrix Performance Management Workshop can expect to leave with:
• An understanding the differences between Performance Managing in a Hierarchy compared to a Matrix
• The ability to conduct meaningful Performance Reviews, Assessment and Performance Feedback
• Tools, tips and techniques that help people to develop a ‘local’ performance culture and focus
• The skills to influence challenging performance dialogues with poor performers
