We have spent several years designing, proving and are continually improving our solutions in partnership with our clients who operate in globally complex environments. Primarily because we and our clients were frustrated trying to fit square, 'hierarchical' training solutions into round, 'matrix' training need holes !
All the 'matrix specific' materials we have developed with our clients over the years are 'sense-making' tools specifically designed for strategic and tactical use in complex, multi-dimensional operating environments.
Many of our clients (often through costly and bitter experiences) found that 'fixing' a structure, stream 'lean-ing' a process, or applying performance incentives that sustain hierarchical behaviours and mindsets only ever generated iterative change.
Some training, coaching and even consulting providers will often suggest they deliver 'matrix solutions', but when you ask them what is actually 'matrix specific' about their offerings, they usually describe solutions based on practices and techniques designed to deliver structural or process improvements in 20th century hierarchical organisations - not 21st century matrix based ones !
Global social and technological integration, coupled with greater holistic (end-to-end) process thinking; coupled with inclusive work practices have fundamentally transformed the way organisations work. And caused a radical 're-think' about strategic planning methods, operational organising and the kind of beliefs, behaviours, knowledge and skills needed to remain competative.
The training 'fixes' most providers offer do not even attempt to address these more complex 21st century work issues, which is surprising given that organisations are using more 'matrixed' ways of behaving, thinking, working and leading, not less !
