"The ability to navigate the political landscape of the organisation for the positive and mutual benefit of self and Stakeholders"
The Political Intelligence section of The MaCE LDR™ provides people with an understanding of their current perspective on navigating and negotiating the political landscape of their organisation.
Matrix structures, because of the inherent complexity and ambiguity, have greater opportunities for higher levels of political activity than other organisational forms. Hierarchical managers rely on the use of covert power and position to promote self-serving agendas; whereas in matrix structures such practices are easily identified and discouraged because of the negativity they cause.
This is why MaCE Leaders at every level have to develop an effective network of allies and understand how the political landscape of their organisation 'really works'; and can manoeuvre around and leverage different political power bases, while using positive political behaviours and practices (which promote an open & transparent culture), while pursuing personal & organisational goals.
The 3 Levels that a MaCE Leader can achieve in this Capability Area are Gold, Silver or Bronze...
Leaders at this level help their Stakeholders to become more politically skilful; are pro-active in contributing towards the creation of positive political workplaces; and are viewed by their colleagues as being both politically adept and able to influence the formal & informal networks in their organisation to maximum personal & Stakeholder effect. A challenge for Leaders at this level is in extending their reach beyond their work area to leverage more powerful & influential networks.
Silver (Developing) Level
Leaders at this level know how to use a range of political strategies to influence Stakeholders; can build effective power & influence bases; and appreciate how the politics in their organisation works. A challenges Leaders face at this level is being consistent in their approach to influencing so that their positive intentions are not misinterpreted or misrepresented by those with self-serving agendas, which they discourage by the use of transparent and open political influencing behaviours.
Bronze (Learning) Level
Leaders at this level often believe politics is a bad thing, usually because they are unaware of the positive political strategies available to them and the different types of political preferences and power that exist within their organisation; or else are unskilled in using political influencing techniques to achieve transparent ‘win-win’ outcomes. The challenges for Leaders at this level is learning how to handle people with self-serving agendas; discouraging the use of negative politics in their own work area; and developing a high level of political intelligence that enables them influence people positively and purposefully.
but if you really want to test someone's character,
give them power.
